NEHAWU Western Cape To Embark On A March To The University Of Cape Town

The National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union [NEHAWU] in the Western Cape will embark on a march action to the University of Cape Town [UCT] to demand an immediate implementation of single bargaining structure, amongst other demands.
Currently, the university limits the powers of the union to only negotiate for cleaners, security and general workers while denying the union its right to negotiate for lecturers and other professional staff who are its members, a conduct the union has tried to resolve for a while but with no success.
The march is therefore as a consequence of the failure by UCT Management to resolve issues affecting our members, workers in general and students in that institution.
The union will submit a memorandum of demands which include amongst others the following:
- Restoration of outstanding bargaining process for non-salary demands for 2022
- New Primary Health service provide - have deteriorated to a point that members have lost hope in it and are calling on the management to appoint an alternative service provider that will be able to provide better a service.
- Extended funeral benefit for staff to be deducted by HR facilitation scheme
- Representation of labour in the University Council and Senate to facilitate a meeting with the Higher Education Ministry
- End of appointments without advertising positions
- Development Dialogue review to be speed up.
- Building of the guard houses as security personnel suffer when the weather is extreme
- Insourcing of staff members working for catering company named Food and Connect
- Bernard Souls petition to be excluded from operations.
The march will take place as follows:
